Estéticas de Resistencia: Collage y Arte Político

July 2023

Inspired by a paper written by Sam Ritholtz and Anna Corrigan for the WRAW project’s special issue in Security Dialogue, we invited Argentinian artists Lucila Quieto & Natalia Fortuny to Bogotá to lead a collage workshop for 29 war-affected women. The workshop highlighted the importance of photography & collage in human rights advocacy. Those who lost loved ones in violence were encouraged to evoke the materiality of the absence, utilizing photos to ensure "that the disappeared continue to take up space in the present." The results were stunning and powerful -- grief, absence, and joy captured in each collage.

Then, in collaboration with the fabulous team at RADAR, we launched the collages alongside stunning portraits of the participants by Carlos Saavedra, documentary from the workshop, & quotes capturing participants' impressions of how artistic production connects to justice. The launch was especially powerful because we could share it with all of the participants and members of LSE's Gender Hub, which convened in Bogotá for our 3rd convention.

We are grateful to all who came, and all who made it possible.
